I photograph weddings at St Michael’s Manor regularly. This beautiful local venue is a popular choice with couples, and it’s not difficult to see why. St Michael’s Manor is a townhouse hotel set in 5 acres of private gardens. It is located in the heart of the bustling City Centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
WEDDINGS AT ST MICHAEL’S MANOR
St Michael’s Manor is a great wedding venue for many reasons, but here’s a list of my particular favourite things about it.
Firstly couples have exclusive hire of the venue. This is something not all Hertfordshire venues offer and is an important factor when considering your venue. Although venues offering multiple weddings on the same day do a good job of keeping them staggered and separate, there is still a chance you will see another wedding party.
So if the idea of seeing another wedding on your special day fills you with dread, choose a venue that offers exclusive use.
Secondly, the rooms and space at St Michael’s Manor, both indoors & outside, provide great photo opportunities whatever the weather. The inside space includes the Orangery, two function rooms, a lounge bar and access to 30 bedrooms and suites. The Orangery/Restaurant, Cedar Suite, Oak Lounge and Summerhouse are all licensed for Civil Ceremonies.
Also, having everything under one roof gives me as your photographer, the chance to capture morning preparations from each side. Popping between rooms to photograph the excitement of getting ready, and giving you both an insight into what the other got up to.
THE GARDENS AT ST MICHAEL’S MANOR
The reception room opens out onto the large terrace, private gardens and lake. The Summerhouse overlooking the lake can be used for summer ceremonies. This is a great space for drinks receptions and outdoor group photos on dry days. And with the gardens being close to your reception, you have the flexibility to nip outside in between rain showers.
Whilst the weather is one thing you cannot control on a wedding day. To have a venue with space for photos indoors if necessary without disrupting the reception set-up is a great advantage.
Finally, St Michael’s Manor is located a short walk from St Albans City Centre. Its central location is fantastic for accessing alternative hotels if needed for your guests, and for alternative ceremony options such as St Albans registry office or religious ceremonies.

St Albans offers couples plenty of choices when it comes to their wedding day. I have had several couples who have married elsewhere in St Albans and gone on to have their wedding reception at St Michael’s Manor.
St Albans Cathedral is a grand option for those wanting a religious ceremony, although not available to all. Following the ceremony there is a short walk down the cobbled streets of Fishpools St, formerly the ancient city of Verulamium to St Michael’s Manor.
St Albans Registry office is a great option for couples having smaller, or more informal weddings. It is located at the top of St Albans City Centre so is a 5-minute drive through the town centre to St Michael’s Manor. It is walkable, with plenty of pub stops along the way, although I probably wouldn’t recommend it wearing heels!
