It’s fair to say 2020 hasn’t quite worked out as planned. The rise of micro weddings in Hertfordshire was an unexpected result of a period in history no one could have predicted.
In March, Spring wedding season in Hertfordshire should have been starting. However, a pandemic beyond our imagination arrived in the UK.
Subsequently causing loss of life, livelihoods, and ruining all plans for millions of people.

As a result, the UK went into lockdown, and weddings of any size were no longer permitted.
To begin with couples were busy moving their Spring weddings to an Autumn weddings. However, as each month rolled on it was apparent that weddings in 2020 would not go ahead as planned in any capacity.

It wasn’t until July before weddings for up to only 30 people were allowed. But, with so many restrictions, including no wedding receptions, it was impossible for most Hertfordshire couples to go ahead.
Couples who rearranged their Spring weddings to Autumn and Winter, were subsequently having to postpone. With no guarantee of what the next few months would bring.

At the point that I write this (late November 2020) we are just about to come out of a second lockdown and into a Tiered system.
This means weddings will once again be allowed but only for up to 15 guests.
But, some weddings did still go ahead. Despite the situation, some couples did choose to get married. Weddings in Hertfordshire did go ahead during the pandemic.

Whilst Covid did a great job of ruining most people’s wedding plans. It actually prompted Margaret and David to finally make some wedding plans.
They announced to their family completely out of the blue that after 41 years together, they were getting married.

Katie and Peter chose to marry at their local Registry Office in Watford, Hertfordshire (www.hertfordshire.gov.uk) with only three guests attending. However virtually 100’s of guests attended as a live feed streamed their ceremony to friends and family in the UK, and America.
And a Bagpiper arranged by Katie’s friends in New York surprised the couple after the ceremony. A brilliant accompaniment to our little post wedding photoshoot.
Fortunette and Mathew brought their wedding forward to 4pm the day before the second lockdown came into effect, with only three guests in attendance but a live stream to Fortunette’s family in America.
Consequently, St Albans registry Office in St Albans Hertfordshire was very busy on that day as couples rushed to exchange vows before the country went into a second lockdown.
WHAT DID WE LEARN?
On a single Saturday in August over the bank holiday weekend 4,452 arranged weddings in the UK were cancelled. We have learnt without doubt, that this pandemic has singularly crushed 1,000’s of couples plans and dreams. As well as the wedding industry as a whole.
But, beyond this I have also learnt a lot from this year…
Every singly the lockdown weddings I photographed was really joyful beyond my expectation. It has reinforced to me that love really does bring out the best in people.
Firstly, I have learnt that weddings are completely stripped back of all their grandeur, to the simplest of ceremonies are just as emotional. And secondly, I learnt that a few very special guests are just as perfect as a venue full of hundreds of wedding guests.
In summary, I already knew that small weddings can be every bit as spectacular as a big wedding. But this year has reinforced more than ever that it’s the people, not the ‘stuff’ that makes a wedding day.
So, if you are planning your wedding day try not to get sucked into having a wedding you think you should have. And instead have the wedding you want, no matter how big or how small.
