The dreaded rain on your wedding day. It’s the one thing you can’t control, and likely to be one of the biggest focus points for any couple in the lead-up to their wedding day.
As Weather watch starts to dominate the countdown to your wedding day. The Met Office & BBC weather apps are on constant refresh and your anxiety starts to increase.
During the planning process when you dream about how your wedding day will be, is it ever raining? I bet not.
rain on your wedding day
Rain on your wedding day seems to consistently be the biggest dread for most couples. But, a few simple considerations when planning your day can make all the difference. And if rain is forecast, it won’t not put a dampener on your wedding day.
Here’s my advice for how to deal with rain on your wedding day…..
RAIN AND YOUR WEDDING VENUE
Hertfordshire has amazing wedding venues to suit every style and budget. A lot of wedding venues have the option for beautiful outdoor wedding ceremonies, and you will be sold. But take a moment to really look around the venue and yourself….
IF YOU CAN’T GET MARRIED OUTSIDE, IS THE INTERIOR JUST AS GOOD?
South Farm in Royston, Hertfordshire is a great example. Couples can say their vows in the summer house overlooking the lake.
However, should the weather turn, South Farm’s barns are an equally impressive backdrop in which to say your vows.
Hatfield House in Hatfield, Hertfordshire is a perfect venue for rain dodging. The beautiful Knot Gardens are directly on the doorstep of The Old Palace. And Hatfield House’s landscaped grounds are just a stone’s throw from the Knot gardens.
How easy is it to dodge the rain showers and still get outdoor photos?
Ideally you don’t want all of your wedding photos indoors. Particularly if you are surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens, as so many Hertfordshire wedding venues are.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve dashed out with a couple in between showers, to make sure we ticked their wish of some photos in the stunning Hatfield House grounds.
IT CAN RAIN AT SUMMER WEDDINGS
The great British summer, right – wrong. You would expect blazing sunshine for late August. But the honest truth is you are no more guaranteed the weather in any month of the year. I have photographed weddings in August where it has rained all day. And I have photographed weddings in December with blue skies and sunshine all day long. Nothing is guaranteed.
Which leads me on nicely to…
BE PREPARED FOR RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY
As the saying goes- failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Being prepared and embracing the ‘whatever’ really does make a difference.
This Hertfordshire Bride had wellington boots and brollies to match her colour scheme for her wedding Shenley Cricket Club, Hertfordshire. Invest in a pair of co-ordinating wellies if you plan on using your venues grounds if the weather is wet.
And if you are getting married somewhere where guests will need to dodge potential showers, it’s the little details they’ll really thank you for.
There are plenty umbrella hire companies out there that supply umbrellas to suit your wedding colours, along with beautiful storage stands. This Bride made sure there were umbrellas on standby for her Tipi wedding in a rustic Hertfordshire village pub. For her wedding she simply stocked up on some golf umbrellas. Remember they don’t have to be fancy if budget doesn’t allow, they just have to be practical and keep your guests dry.
EMBRACE WHAT YOU CAN’T CHANGE
And if you are willing, with brollies in hand most photographers would encourage you to get out and make it part of your wedding day photos. After all it tells the real story of the day. And that is what your wedding pictures should be all about.
REMEMBER WHY YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED
Regardless of the weather your wedding day will be incredible. Your day is a celebration of the love you have for each other in the company of your family and friends. Yes there’s a chance your hair might get a bit wind-swept, or your dress may get a bit damp at the bottom. That just shows you fully embraced your day. You cannot change the weather, but you can absolutely decide how you will let it affect your day.
HIRE AN EXPERIENCED PHOTOGRAPHER
Yes of course I’m going to say this, but with good reason.
I have been shooting weddings for over 14 years, and I have experienced every weather scenario. Often we get more than one season in a wedding day! An experienced professional photographer, has the right equipment, including the right lighting in case we need to take your photos indoors. They also are used to working with all sorts of weather and lighting scenarios. And most importantly they can work quickly if the weather changes.
On rainy wedding days I always looking for a break in the weather, and how to give my couples as many options as possible for their photos. Remember when it comes to your wedding photographer experience really does matter.
